Machine Shop
Click on an image to enlarge it
The machine shop is the only part of the Mill still left standing today. Originally this building housed the water wheels which generated the mechanical energy to run the machinery in the mill. In about 1914, after the mill had burned down, an electric generator was installed. The power from the generator was fed to the Mayo mills plant down the river for additional resources. Today the generator is running again, but is now maintained by the power company.
From the side you can see where a large arched doorway used to be. Today the hole has been blocked up with a standard steel door inserted. Notice the wall that runs into the left corner of the building. Traces of this wall extend beyond the left side of this photo. I want to say it's part of the back wall of the mill. If this building was right up against the back of the mill, why were there windows in the front of this building?
From the back side of the machine shop we can see the tailrace. This is where the water returns to the river after traveling down the canal, through the bulkhead, under the mill, and through the water wheels in the machine shop.
