Tragedy Strikes

| On June 11, 1911 about 5:55pm a loom on the 4th floor catches fire. John Willie Richardson was near the loom and threw a bucket of water on the fire hoping to extinguish the small flame. however, the water spread the flames. By the time John got out of the building the entire 4th floor was engulfed. |

The open windows which were left open on the hot day fed the flames. A failed bearing in the water pump rendered the sprinkler system useless. |
| All attmpts at controlling the blaze failed. Before long the entire mill was engulfed. |

|
The only thing the people of Avalon could do is watch as their livelyhood turned to ashes. |
| When the fire burned out, all that remained of the mill was part of the front and rear walls. |
