Avalon Dam

| The Avalon dam, located maybe 1/3 mile up the Mayo River from Avalon. The dam was constructed of stone thought to have come from a quarry in Mt Airy, NC. The dam divirted the water from the Mayo river through a man made canal. The water was used to generate mechanical energy to run the machinery in the Avalon Mill. |

To the left of the above photo is the beginning of the canal. Here the amount of water allowed to enter the canal could be controlled by opening and closing gates operated by the manual actuators on top of the wall. |
| From the bottom of the dam we can see that an adjustable amout of water can be allowed to flow back into the river bed. This could have been to further control the water level of the canal. |
